Mastering IELTS Listening: Tips, Strategies, and Essential Information

There are 4 parts of IELTS Test for both Academic and General Training. In this page I will discuss about all the information regarding IELTS Listening.

IELTS Listening Information:

There are 4 sections in IELTS listening tests. Section 1 and Section 2 are based on social situations. Section 3 and Section 4 are academic conversations. There are a total of 40 questions in the listening test. Each section contains 10 questions. Candidates get one point for each question they answer correctly. You will not lose a point for a wrong answer. Do not leave an empty space in the answer sheet, just make a guess, maybe it will give you a point.

The listening test lasted for 40 minutes.  Candidates listen to the recording to answer the questions for 30 minutes and then 10 minutes to write answers on the answer sheet. But for the computer based IELTS exam candidate will get 2 minutes to check the answer.

You will only get one chance to listen to the recording. That means the recording will not be repeated. So, listen carefully while the recordings are being played.

The recording will be played according to the questions. Which means the answer will follow the order of the question. Let’s make it clearer; the answer for question 1 will come before the answer for question 2 and so on.

You will get some time to read the questions before you listen to them. The recording will tell you how many questions are coming for the next recording and will also provide some time to read.

You can make notes, underline words and can write on the question paper but it will not be marked. Only the answer sheet will be marked. It is very important to make notes for listening tests. For the computer-based exam you can highlight words on the screen. Remember that you will not get any extra paper for taking any notes.

Spelling is very important. If the answer is spelled incorrectly that it will be marked as wrong. As well as for Plural and Singular.  Capital letters are not mandatory to use but you can write it.

Remember that, both Academic test takers and General Training test takers’ question will be same. Their question pattern and marking will be the same for both.
